New environmental concept art from Global Agenda

As promised, we're happy to show off three new pieces of concept art from Hi-Rez Studio's upcoming spy-fi MMO Global Agenda. This time around we get to see the Missile Assembly Observation Hall, the Nomadic Drilling Platforms (which is probably one of the coolest concepts ever) and the Pacific Research Facility.

We've been talking a good bit about the game lately, as some of you have noticed. The main reason for this is the avalanche of new content coming out of hiding after flying so low under the radar for the several years that this game has been in production. This is good for you because it means we'll be getting much more, and showing it off to the readers. Check out the three new pieces of concept art in our complete Global Agenda gallery below.

Child's Play and gamerDNA launch Game Community Contest for charity

The online community website gamerDNA has recently announced their association with the non-profit charity Child's Play for a new online contest. This contest will run through December, gathering donations for children's hospitals across the globe in a cause that Child's Play has remained dedicated to for quite a while. In fact, last year alone, Child's Play raised over $1.3 million in donations from gamers everywhere.

In this current contest held by gamerDNA, members of participating gaming communities will compete in the gamerDNA Decades of Influence Quiz, which is described as "an entertaining and nostalgic multiple-choice quiz that helps gamers learn what aspects of the past four decades of gaming have had the most influence on their individual gaming identity." From there, the participants will share their quiz results badges with as many online communities as possible. The gaming community that shares the most badges will have the power to chose which charity receives the assortment of prizes provided by gamerDNA. World of Warcraft
Tabula Rasa to shut down in February 2009

It's been a fairly good run for Tabula Rasa, but the inevitable has now been announced. As of February 28, 2009, Tabula Rasa will be shutting down its servers for good. We've feared an Auto-Assault-like fate for the game for a while now, but confirmation of this event truly saddens everyone in the MMO community.

According to the announcement, the folks at TR plan on going out in style, though. Not only will they continue to pump out some new, quality content in the remaining months, but the game will actually go free-to-play for its final month and a half. SCI FI and Trion hire ex-Blizzard talent for MMO/TV show project

You may remember the announcement this summer from the cable channel SCI FI about their collaboration with Trion World Network to create the first-ever television series connected with an MMO. While this news perked the interest of many gamers and SCI FI fans, we have only heard sprinkles of news here and there about the project.

Today, both companies announced the hiring of two new top industry talents for this MMO/TV show project. One is Kevin Beardslee, who you may know as a founder of Carbine Studios and a former developer on Blizzard's World of Wacraft. He will act as the Senior Development Director for the game half of the project. For the television side, Peter Egan (no relation to our own James Egan) will be writing the pilot episode on SCI FI. His previous work includes Playmakers (ESPN), Over There (FX Network), Medium, Medical Investigation (both on NBC) and SCI FI's own The Dresden Files. We wish both men the best of luck in their roles with this new innovative project.

New set of LotRO videos show more of Moria

Even after the launch of Lord of the Rings Online's Mines of Moria expansion this last Tuesday, Turbine is still pumping out the video previews for each of their new areas of the mines themselves.

A few days ago, they released a video for the Redhorn Lodes in the central Moria region, and The Great Delving, which is the first section you encounter when entering the mines. Then today, they've released yet another video depicting Zelm-melek, which is smack dab in the middle of the mines, above Redhorn Lodes. If you've reached any of these areas in game yet, you know that these videos don't quite do them justice, yet they're still worth a look. Check them out embedded just after the cut.

Veteran's guide to Mines of Moria: What's in it for me?

So Lord of the Rings Online's first expansion, Mines of Moria, has released with minimal problems. Admittedly, the launch went off better than most, although there were a few server issues on that first day. As a veteran player of the game, with perhaps two or more level 50s, you've been playing Moria since the servers went live, with only breaks for school or work. We understand that and we only want to make your time with Moria that much better, so we've created this guide to the changes in Moria according to what a veteran player would seek. The low-level guide has been done, and now it's your turn, oh Master of Middle-earth.

Luckily for you, most of Moria's content was geared towards you. The biggest exception to this is the two new classes, as they would need to be created from level one. Still, between class balance, ten new levels, new instances and an entire underworld to explore, you have plenty to keep your highest-level characters busy for quite awhile. Star Wars: The Old Republic interview with Community Manager Sean Dahlberg

In a recent interview with Allakhazam, BioWare's Sean Dahlberg discusses their newest MMO project, Star Wars: The Old Republic. As Community Manager for the project, Dahlberg was able to give some great insight into the game's storyline and direction, or at least as much as he could say for now.

One particularly interesting part of this interview is the discussion on PvP. As Allakhazam points out, the Republic and Sith Empire are not exactly friendly towards each other, so PvP would be an obvious game feature. Dahlberg explains that PvP is definitely part of the game, yet points out that TOR "is not looking to be the jack-of-all-trades game. Instead, we are going to focus on what we do best and make sure the game and all its elements are fun and entertaining." He goes on to explain away what may have sounded like a suggestion that the game will be PvP-heavy by saying, "TOR will offer fun and rewarding gameplay no matter what your play style is. If you're not a PvPer at heart, there are definitely other things within the game to do."

Sounds very promising, and we're excited to hear more about the game, and relay it all to you, when more news becomes available.

WoW's Lich King sells record 2.8 million copies in 24 hours

The numbers are in and Blizzard has broken their own record once again. After selling 2.8 million copies in 24 hours, World of Warcraft's second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, has set the record as the fastest-selling PC game of all time, according to Blizzard. The irony is that the previous record holder was also Blizzard with their first WoW expansion, The Burning Crusade, which sold 2.4 million on the January 2007 launch day.

Blizzard's CEO and co-founder, Mike Morhaime, commented on the occasion, "We're grateful for the incredible support that players around the world have continued to show for World of Warcraft." Now the company is setting its sights on breaking the next record of 3.5 million copies sold in the first month; a record also set by The Burning Crusade. At this pace, they should easily break that next week.

Are Wizard101's child protection measures too much?

As probably one of the most vocal supporters of KingsIsle Entertainment's Wizard101, Tipa over at West Karana certainly has shown us the beauty of this new free-to-play children's MMO. Her blog posts have covered several months of experiences progressing through the game, and have probably had a hand in getting many others into it as well.

In a recent post, Tipa takes a retrospective look back at the game and what she thinks was done right or wrong in its development so far. One particularly interesting part is her analysis of the security measures taken to prevent children from talking to random strangers in the game. "W101 is a great game," she writes. "It's a fun game, it's an innovative game, but it's a game that has bought into the hysteria that every adult is a real or potential child abuser, completely disregarding that children are in considerably more danger from people they know in real life than from anyone they might meet playing a video game." Massively's ArenaNet interview: The past, present and future of Guild Wars PvP

Since the game's launch in April of 2005, ArenaNet's Guild Wars has set the bar a bit higher for future MMOs in relation to gameplay, their unique business model and skill balance. Their constant attention to detail when balancing literally hundreds of game skills between PvP and PvE has been an ongoing progression for everyone on the ArenaNet team.

Often seen by hardcore players as the name behind this constant balance is Isaiah "Izzy" Cartwright, Game Designer at ArenaNet. We were able to catch up with Cartwright for a brief interview regarding the past, present and future state of PvP in Guild Wars. All LotRO servers down for a hotfix

Know Your LotRO Lore: The Watcher in the Water

Welcome to Know Your LotRO Lore, a new weekly column here at Massively showcasing the lore of J.R.R. Tolkien's world as it intersects with Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online.

With Mines of Moria releasing today, we thought we'd focus this week's Know Your LotRO Lore on one of the key monsters you'll encounter on your trip into the mines: The Watcher in the Water. This is the tentacled creature that lives in the dark pool of water, just outside of Hollin's Gate (aka Durin's Door). There are many theories as to the nature and origin of this creature, and most of it is either pure speculation or educated guess.

In this article, we'll explain the creature's role in Tolkien's Lore, the many speculations of its purpose and how it pertains to Lord of the Rings Online and the first expansion, Mines of Moria. Follow along through the link below... and beware!

Know Your LotRO Lore: Origins of the Watcher

In the first volume of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien describes a creature that lives in a dark lake, beneath the western walls of Moria. This lake was created when the river Sirannon was dammed "by someone, or something." His only name for this creature is Watcher in the Water, and his only description includes the fact that it is "tentacled". Even in Tolkien's earliest versions of The Fellowship of the Ring, the encounter with the Watcher is almost exactly how it is presented in the final product, so its existence must have been very important to him.

Beyond that, speculation runs rampant from researchers who have studied Tolkien's work. The Watcher has been called everything from a kraken, to a cold-drake to a giant squid, but Tolkien never specifically identified it in his works.

Essayist Allison Harl has created one of the most famous theories on the Watcher by identifying it as a kraken created and bred by Morgoth in Utumno. This was partial inspiration for Peter Jackson's version in his 2001 film Fellowship of the Ring, where the creature was depicted as a giant black squid-like monster with several rows of sharp teeth.

Know Your LotRO Lore: The Watcher's Role

According to Tolkien's Christian-influenced writings, evil creatures cannot simply be created as an autonomous force, but they are spawned from the perversion of good. This leads to even more speculation on the Watcher's purpose in the water, and in front of the gate to Moria.

Despite the fact that Durin's Door is password-protected, some have speculated that the Watcher was brought there for the specific reason of guarding the door. The question is, was it to guard against good, or guard against evil? The fact that the Watcher grabbed Frodo (even though Boromir is the one to actually garner the creature's attention), has led some to believe that it saw him as evil, because of his possession of the Ring. Of course, since there is no direct mention of a purpose, this is only a guess.
