The Daily Grind: Have you had to cancel an MMO subscription?

Filed under: Business models, Economy, Events, real-world, MMO industry, Free-to-play, The Daily Grind

While there may be reason to believe the economy is set to improve in the near future, at the moment the United States is facing something of a downturn (the blogger writes delicately). As a result, everyone's looking to their own personal bottom line. Things that you'd let slide a year ago might not be so easy to write off today. As a result, it sounds like a lot of people in the MMO gaming community are re-examining their hobby to see where pennies might be pinched.

This blogger, for example, has had to made some hard decisions about where he's going to put his play time and his pay time. The ongoing awesomeness of Middle-earth won out over new fun in Azeroth for the time being. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's let an account lapse, though. Have you put an MMO subscription out to pasture while things blow over? If you have, how did you make your decision? And, if you're not playing a subscription game anymore, have you started in with a free-to-play alternative or just turned to other ways of gaming?

EVE Online player loses USD 19,000 in shady virtual currency deal

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Business models, Economy, Events, real-world, Forums, MMO industry, News items, Legal

The sci-fi game EVE Online is set apart from many other massively multiplayer online games by its economy. While there are currently problems with the game's market due to a serious exploit, the economy isn't getting reset anytime soon. The currency of EVE's virtual economy is the Inter Stellar Kredit (ISK). As in the real world, money can be power in EVE's 'New Eden' galaxy. Most online games built around a virtual economy will ultimately need to deal with the real money trading (RMT) issue -- either make it a bannable offense or support and regulate it in some way. CCP Games figured if RMT is happening whether they want it to or not, they may as well have some way to regulate it.

EVE Online
has a few legitimate ways to bring real world money into the game. Game Time Cards (EVE Time Codes) can be converted to ISK without risk of getting your teeth banhammered in by CCP Games. They offer a secure way to sell game time to players where neither party can be scammed, and more recently a way to turn game time into an item (PLEX) that can be sold on the open market in-game. When a player buys that item, he or she extends their account subscription. The upside for some players is that they can actually pay their subscription fees in the ISK they've earned in-game, for others it enables them to buy a faction battleship or a number of other virtual items.

But... some people just go too far with all this, and buy ISK in huge amounts. Even worse is doing so outside of the EULA-safe methods. This was the case with an EVE player in Denmark, who paid 100,000 Danish Krones (the rough equivalent of 13,500 Euros or USD 19,000) for currency from a shady ISK seller outside of the secure system, and was ultimately left with empty pockets, even after the case ended up in court.

Online games become a hot issue in Israeli politics

Filed under: Real life, Culture, Events, real-world, Politics

Throughout the recent American presidential campaign for Barack Obama, online gaming played a fairly important role. Not only did Obama use in-game advertising, but some of his appointed staff are vocal World of Warcraft players. The politicians of Israel have taken note of the effectiveness and popularity of Obama's campaign strategies, and are implementing a bit of online gaming into their own upcoming national elections.

Israel's ruling Kadima party will soon release an online game that chides former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. it doesn't seem to be an MMO-type game, but more of a flash-based online game, we're guessing. Yet with the popularity of political campaigns in Second Life and more politicians coming out as dedicated WoW players, will the day ever come where these debates get more heated? Can you imagine watching the future president battling his opponent in the Battlegrounds?

Economic crisis may force CCP Games to leave Iceland

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Business models, Economy, Events, real-world, News items

The global financial crisis is hitting many companies and individuals very hard. This is especially prevalent in Iceland, home of CCP Games -- the developers of the sci-fi massively multiplayer online game EVE Online. The collapse of Iceland's banking system and currency has been devastating to the nation. "Icelanders are reeling from the shock of having everything they knew virtually disappear overnight," Valur Gunnarsson reports from Reykjavik for The Guardian.

Despite these economic woes, Hilmar V. Pétursson, the CEO of CCP Games, gave assurances all is well with the company back in October. He's stated that CCP is "well isolated" from the banking crisis, that their holdings and assets were diversified enough (due to partner relationships in different parts of the world) to stave off the ruin that many other Icelandic companies are facing. But there's a potential downside to that diversification: restrictions on access to foreign currencies have gone into effect in Iceland. Specifically -- as it relates to CCP Games -- on foreign investment coming into the country. Are these restrictions enough of a hassle that CCP Games would ever need to leave Iceland?

EVE players get free advertising during live PvP tournament broadcast

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Events, real-world, Events, in-game, MMO industry, PvP, News items

A popular event in EVE Online is returning this winter: the Alliance PvP Tournament, which kicks off late January, continuing through to final rounds in February. The final rounds of the Alliance PvP Tournament will be broadcast live, which is the basis for the latest announcement from CCP Games. EVE Online dev CCP Fallout has stated there will be free advertising slots for players to use during the live broadcast of the tournament finals. As CCP Fallout says, "Simply put: this is the biggest ad space available for EVE players and yet it will cost you absolutely nothing to submit an advertisement."

We cringe at the thought of some of the video footage that could make it into the live broadcast (while looking forward to it as well), but CCP Games has laid out some general and technical guidelines that should keep the live broadcast relatively clean. Also, they've opened up the use of some of their intellectual property for players to use in producing their adverts -- namely the EVE Online music and sound effects. (Although it must be noted that you actually have to use their music and sound effects, due to copyright issues that would inevitably result from widespread Rick-rolling.)

Runes of Magic reaches 100k characters created on first day of open beta

Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Business models, Events, real-world, MMO industry, New titles, Runes of Magic

As we mentioned last week, the highly-anticipated Runes of Magic fantasy MMO from Frogster Interactive has just entered open beta on December 15th. Normally the news of a small free-to-play MMO would be mentioned, and then subsequently forgotten as the larger, big-budget games continue to hog the attention. Yet Runes of Magic has an announcement that they're quite proud of: 100,000 characters created in the first 24 hours of the open beta.

Not only that, but out of the total 220,000 registrations to date, 20,000 accounts were created on Monday alone with more than 2 million quests completed. Just to be clear, this is not 100k accounts created on the first day. It's 100k characters created by 20k accounts. Still, it's great news for Frogster Interactive and we expect those accounts to rise throughout beta and into launch, which is scheduled for release in Q1 of 2009. For the complete press release and more information on the game's features, continue reading after the cut below.

SOE CEO John Smedley explains the Station Cash service roll out

Filed under: Business models, Culture, Events, real-world, Free-to-play, Massively Interviews

The decision to deploy the new SOE Station Cash service in EverQuest and EverQuest II was as unexpected as any of the eyebrow-raising announcements this week. That it was the first microtransaction-related news to drop, and arrived into two long-running games, made it especially dramatic. Player reaction has been fierce on both sides of the discussion, and as we so often try to do we sought out some background on where this decision came from.

We sat down earlier this week with SOE's CEO John Smedley for a talk about the whys and wherefors of the Station Cash service. More than just a novelty incorporated into their flagship games, Station Cash is an important new service vital to the future of Sony Online Entertainment. Whether as backing for their upcoming free-to-play title Free Realms or as a venue for 'extras' in other in-development titles, microtransactions are here to stay in the SOE empire.

Whether you've already read our Station Cash FAQ or not, you're sure to have lots of questions. So join us as we speak to Mr. Smedley about why the rollout was so fast, what they intend to use Station Cash for in the future, some of the services they intend to provide, and a few hints at why you might be ordering a Station Cash product for a friend next Christmas season. Read on.

Smedley Station Cash Rollout pt. 2

Filed under: Business models, Culture, Events, real-world, Free-to-play, Massively Interviews

So, to make sure we understand, in games like EQ where all the microtransactions are value-added content, it will never effect gameplay. In other games where you design this in from the ground up with the understanding this will be a part of gameplay, it's not a big deal.

John: Exactly. The most controversial part of what we did, I think, is put it into an existing game. I knew that would be controversial, but I do believe there isn't as big an outcry as you might see on some websites. I think the world is changing, and I think more and more these kinds of options are going to appeal to players.

I also believe firmly that this will eventually get rid of farming and those things. Or at least it will drastically decrease it. Here's a good example why: Instead of paying some power leveler, buying an experience potion lets you do it yourself a lot faster. Where's the harm in that? That's our thought on it.

Join Fallen Earth creators during their monthly "Day with the Devs"

Filed under: Sci-fi, Fallen Earth, Events, real-world, Events, in-game, Game mechanics, MMO industry, New titles

Today marks yet another "Day with the Devs" for Fallen Earth, where players have an opportunity to interact with the upcoming post-apocalytic MMO's creators. The first one of these was last month during a Stractics House of Commons chat, but today's will double the effort. At 9pm EST tonight, you can head over to the Stratics HoC chat to talk with the devs about Crafting and PvP. All questions will need to be submitted on the Fallen Earth forums ahead of time.

Plus, at 4pm EST this afternoon, all registered Alpha participants will have the chance to fight alongside the devs for control of New Gallows, one of the conflict towns in Sector Two. Not in the Alpha testing program? No problem! The team is currently accepting clans, while individuals will soon be able to sign up through forum membership. You can check out the main website for the individual Alpha sign-up info coming soon. If you're not in Alpha now, you certainly won't make it for this afternoon's event, but the Fallen Earth folks promise to have these "Day with the Devs" on the second Thursday of each month. Check out this post by Community Director Tiggs for more information on today's happenings.
