Turbine's RMT Manager position not for any current games

With RMT being the hottest topic of 2009 MMO gaming news so far, we recently ran a post about Turbine's job listing for a Microtransaction Manager. This news was not met with many open arms, as the most vocal RMT detractors spoke up against the speculation that this position could be for one of their favorite Turbine MMOs.

Well fret no more, oh saviors of the subscription plan. In a recent post on LotRO's official forums, Turbine's Sapience clears up the confusion and speculation: "We know the recent job listing has caused a bit of a stir, but please be aware that this posting is for an unannounced future project. We appreciate the thoughts and feedback on both sides thus far."

EVE Online player loses USD 19,000 in shady virtual currency deal

The sci-fi game EVE Online is set apart from many other massively multiplayer online games by its economy. While there are currently problems with the game's market due to a serious exploit, the economy isn't getting reset anytime soon. The currency of EVE's virtual economy is the Inter Stellar Kredit (ISK). As in the real world, money can be power in EVE's 'New Eden' galaxy. Most online games built around a virtual economy will ultimately need to deal with the real money trading (RMT) issue -- either make it a bannable offense or support and regulate it in some way. CCP Games figured if RMT is happening whether they want it to or not, they may as well have some way to regulate it.

EVE Online
has a few legitimate ways to bring real world money into the game. Game Time Cards (EVE Time Codes) can be converted to ISK without risk of getting your teeth banhammered in by CCP Games. They offer a secure way to sell game time to players where neither party can be scammed, and more recently a way to turn game time into an item (PLEX) that can be sold on the open market in-game. When a player buys that item, he or she extends their account subscription. The upside for some players is that they can actually pay their subscription fees in the ISK they've earned in-game, for others it enables them to buy a faction battleship or a number of other virtual items.

But... some people just go too far with all this, and buy ISK in huge amounts. Even worse is doing so outside of the EULA-safe methods. This was the case with an EVE player in Denmark, who paid 100,000 Danish Krones (the rough equivalent of 13,500 Euros or USD 19,000) for currency from a shady ISK seller outside of the secure system, and was ultimately left with empty pockets, even after the case ended up in court.

Meet the Fallen Earth dev team

The developers at Fallen Earth are certainly doing the whole community relations thing the right way, it seems. In addition to special events like Day with the Devs, their forums are bursting with activity. The game's community manager, know as Tiggs, has arranged a series of interviews with the developers where fans of the upcoming post-apocalyptic MMO can ask questions of a certain dev when it's their turn.

For the inaugural interview, we hear from PirateEye, a 3D Animator on the game. While some of the questions are simply a fun way to be silly with the forum members and fans, this seems a great way for people to become more involved with who is making the game. Long gone are the days of unnamed artists and programmers working behind the scenes on our favorite games. This is the age of the developer rock star!

Employers screening WoW players during recruitment?

Would you consider your MMO-gaming habits to be detrimental to your performance as an employee? Lucky for us, we here at Massively are kind of expected to be invested in the MMO world, but it seems that it may be best to keep your playing a secret when looking for other lines of work. Raph Koster picked up on a thread at the f13 forums in which we learn that a recruiter in the online media industry has been told by employers numerous times to straight-up avoid World of Warcraft players. The original poster, who was chatting with the recruiter in question, mentioned some of the positives that can come from playing MMOs, but the recruiter said that none of that mattered to the employers he dealt with and WoW players would not even get a second look.

Some of the reasons cited for the rejections include bad sleeping habits, and an inability to give 100% due to a wandering mind -- presumably wandering to the next Azerothian adventure. Poor WoW has been taking all the heat lately, but it's doubtful that the fans (nor Blizzard) care too much about the bad rap. When it comes to your next job-hunt though ... we're not going to tell you to lie or anything like that, but just be a little wary of the chatty interviewer when they ask if you've checked out the latest WoW expansion, kay guys?

CCP Games on the extent and impact of EVE's starbase exploit

Massively has been watching the issue of a significant starbase exploit in EVE Online, through which some players reaped vast financial rewards, as it went from rumor to confirmation from the developers themselves. Unlike your average run-of-the-mill exploit in most massively multiplayer online games, the exploit in question has had a significant impact on EVE's virtual economy -- the backbone of the game itself. All players in EVE interact in one vast galaxy, and their actions in the sandbox can create ripples felt by their fellow players, which has certainly been the case in this past week.

EVE Online's developer CCP Games has opted to hold off on responding to most press inquiries for comment on the issue, having issued a statement on the matter and then focusing on the investigation and a weekend meeting with EVE's player-elected community representatives, the Council of Stellar Management (CSM). The minutes from that meeting are now available, and several of EVE's developers took part in the discussion: namely CCP's Lead Economist Dr. EyjoG (Dr. Eyjólfur Guðmundsson) and CCP Arkanon -- who heads up the company's Internal Affairs division, which investigates the CCP Games staff themselves, hopefully ensuring that no CCP employee can abuse their influence over the game.

Tabula Rasa's PlanetTR forums to change format

With the news of Tabula Rasa's closing, one might wonder what will become of the game's largest and most popular unofficial forums. As was announced this past weekend, the PlanetTR forums will be changing formats after TR closes down in February. This will all be accomplished through a series of in-game and on-forum roleplaying events, introducing the world to a rogue band of AFS named The Agenda.

You can read a complete backstory on the creation of The Agenda, as well as an in-character thread from the story's Captain Durall for more information. The main in-game event will happen in January, and it promises to be an extensive war, much like their previous Server vs. Server wars, but larger. From there, in March, the forums will change format to appeal to a broader audience and be renamed to The Planet, although the domain name will remain planettr.com. It hasn't been decided exactly what direction the site will take, but you can make your voice heard in this thread, and of course we will be sure to keep players informed with any news.

LotRO's Yule Festival has begun!

The Town Crier is going to be busy these next few weeks as the Yule Festival has officially arrived in Lord of the Rings Online. These winter festivities include contests similar to those at other seasonal events in each of the starting zones: The Shire, Bree, Duillond and Thorin's Hall. There's a return of token collecting, gift boxes, the Inn League and more!

In addition, we have a new horse for Yulemath, as shown in the screenshot above. You can certainly expect a complete guide to the Yule Festival coming very soon from us at Massively, but in the meantime, be sure to check out the official forums as players uncover more in-game goodies!

Rumored four-year, multi-trillion ISK exploit in EVE Online

An exploit in EVE Online has come to light that may have some major repercussions for the game. Massively does not have solid confirmation on the details (and allegations as the case may be), as this has just come to light. The exploit was publicized on a third party EVE forum called Scrapheap Challenge, on Wednesday, December 10th. If this isn't a hoax or an exaggerated account of events, how serious an exploit might this be? Very serious, if the details listed prove to be accurate... The exploit was really a bug related to a network of player owned stations (POS) paired with a moon mining operation, which yielded far too much valuable material far too quickly. Four years and an estimated 2.5 to 3 trillion ISK later, the exploit was found and patched, and the offender(s) banned. Given the claimed amount of ISK involved, it's serious enough to potentially have an impact on the game's economy.

The individual who posted the details of this exploit remains anonymous, and has only identified him or herself as "anotherone", but tells a story of how the exploit came to be: "I would like to tell you a short EVE story. Today all of my EVE Online accounts were banned. I was sure this day would come. What surprises me is that it took CCP this long to catch up with me. Even though they knew about it." It's that last sentence that is sparking so much response from the playerbase -- anotherone asserts that this issue was actually petitioned to CCP Games back in 2004, and subsequently ignored.

The Daily Grind: Do you use official forums?

This morning's rumor about possible new official forums for Warhammer Online made us wonder how you folks see company-run communities. Some developers, like Turbine and SOE, maintain extensive networks of forum sites to support their games and the player organizations inside them. NCsoft's Tabula Rasa, Warhammer, and other more recently released games have eschewed official forums in place of a number of fan-run sites.

We've asked you this once before, almost exactly a year ago ... but a lot has happened this year. So we want to know: which do you prefer? Would you rather chat about your favorite MMO on a site run by players, or in an environment moderated by the company that made it? If you do post to official sites, which forums are your favorite? Rumor: Warhammer Online to open official forums in 2009

Somewhere, somehow, William Shatner and Roseanne Barr are singing a duet. That appears to be the implication of a highly unexpected rumor reported on the Warhammer Alliance forum. Apparently, Warhammer Online will soon be launching company-sanctioned official forums. Back in March of this year, Mythic Entertainment's Mark Jacobs went on a ranting rampage about the very concept of official forums. In that whole discussion, he at one point stated he'd rather hear the two above celebrities slam out a duet together than bear the thought of official forums. His statements came during a period were other companies were making similar announcements, and some companies with official forums were even thinking of shutting theirs down.

So this (at this point) rumor as offered by Warhammer Alliance is something of a surprise. Forum admin Garthilk states this comes from "unofficial people in and out of Mythic, as well as inside EA, all tell[ing us] the same thing." He goes on to say that, if true, this will be a boon for the unofficial fan community. It will take pressure off of their taxed volunteer resources and allow them to better serve the community. We'll watch for an official response from Mythic, as well as further developments on this story.

Darkfall Online slated for January release date

Audio Visual Enterprises SA and Aventurine SA have announced today that the official release date for their fantasy MMO Darkfall Online will be on January 22nd, 2009. After a development cycle that has spanned almost eight years now, it's good to know the game will be leaving its current beta stage and entering the real world like a big boy (or girl, we haven't checked).

Be sure to check out the official announcement over at the Darkfall forums, and check out their main website for more information on the game that boasts being a "seamless and zoneless, non-instanced, sandbox game world."

Tabula Rasa's weekend activites still going strong

As a testament to the fact that Tabula Rasa players aren't throwing down their rifles and giving up that easily, the community events are carrying on stronger than ever. Thanks to fansites such as PlanetTR and Gangrel's Forums, this weekend is chocked full of contests and special events to keep away those end-of-the-game-in-two-months blues.

First, there's the EU Centaurus AFS Boxing Tournament, which is basically the EU server's answer to Friday Night Fights. Speaking of which, this week's FNF will be held on the Orion server at 10pm EST. Finally, we have this month's installment of the Server vs. Server War on the PTS for all to enjoy. EVE's 'Orca' mining vessel facilitates suicide ganks against miners

Among the changes to EVE Online introduced with the Quantum Rise expansion is a new class of ship, the 'Orca' industrial command ship.The ship is intended to be a major asset to mining operations in New Eden, but it's a flexible ship -- and this writer has been waiting to see what clever uses players will have for it. It looks like that day has come... The Orca's substantial cargo capacity, a ship maintenance bay, and corp hangar have made it an ideal base of operations for criminals operating in highsec, with an aim to suicide gank T2 mining ships. In other words, use fully insurable Tech I ships to gank specialized, expensive, and largely uninsurable Tech II ships.

Suicide ganking is nothing new, but one of the major changes CCP Games put into place to dissuade players from committing highsec suicide ganks was to substantially increase the security status penalties players are hit with when committing aggressive acts in high security (Empire) space. But no matter how low one's security status drops, all players can move about in highsec in their ship's capsule. It's only when a criminal enters a ship in highsec space that CONCORD takes action. That is where the Orca comes in. Criminals can board new ships housed within the Orca at a safespot and then warp in on their victims en masse, in multiple waves of suicide ganks. When their suicide gank ships are blasted apart by CONCORD, they can fly in their pods back to the Orca and gear up for the next wave.

Codemasters wants your feedback on Mines of Moria

You've now had almost two weeks to get your feet wet in Lord of the Rings Online's Mines of Moria expansion, and now Codemasters and Turbine want to know what you think. Do you enjoy the new Legendary Weapons? Do you hate the new combat system? Do you want to scream every time you see a pack of Wardens running around in game? In probably every case but the last, Codemasters and Turbine want your feedback.

It's rare that a community team opens themselves up to such a public display of feedback from the community on a brand new expansion, but it seems like a great way to do things, and it shows their confidence in an exceptional product. Mines of Moria Patch 1 release notes show Turbine's humorous side

Now that Lord of the Rings Online's Mines of Moria expansion is out, the bug fixes will commence! Even though the launch was extremely smooth, it's inevitable to find small bugs in the game after any launch. In the most recent Patch 1 for Mines of Moria, these small bugs are addressed and the patch notes have been released.

We have to say, Turbine's sense of humor is quickly becoming legendary on these patch notes and dev diaries. Check after the cut below for just a sample from these patch notes that made us chuckle, and don't forget to review the entire notes on the official forums.
