It is not every day that a U.S. governor is the one to announce the launch window for an MMO, so savor the weirdness while you can: Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/rhode-island-governor-gives-38-studios-copernicus-mmo-a-june-20/">announced at a press conference</a> that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-studios/">38 Studios</a> will be releasing code-name <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/project-copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a> next summer. "What I understand is Copernicus is June of '13," Chafee said. He also stated that he thought the financial deal was a "risky enterprise" from the start.<br />

38 Studios Founder and Chairman Curt Schilling <a href="http://bostonglobe.com/business/2012/05/18/facebook-curt-schilling-denies-paid-himself-back-with-money-thanks-supporters-ailing-studios-video-game-company/EnqdY2flmq0Bf55m4YvdRM/story.html">said on Facebook</a> that rumors of his using the state funds to repay his personal investment in the company was "not true." In a separate post, Schilling attempted to set an optimistic tone: "We will find a way, and the strength, to endure."<br />

We have been following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/rumor-38-studios-may-be-having-financial-trouble/">the financial turmoil</a> that 38 Studios is in following <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/if-38-studios-goes-under-rhode-island-taxpayers-will-be-footing/">its default on paying back Rhode Island</a> for its $75 million loan. 	Since players aren't tremendously happy with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet/">ArenaNet</a>'s answer of "when it's ready" every time the question of the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2/"><em>Guild Wars 2 </em></a>release date comes up, any hint of further clarification is something to be prized. As a game retailer, dates are the sort of thing that come up in <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gamestop">GameStop</a>'s earnings calls. Covering the Q1 conference call released today, Gamespot has CFO Robert Lloyd stating that <em>Guild Wars 2 </em>has been bumped out of the current quarter, putting its release sometime after July. It's worth noting that as of this posting, GameStop's online listing still had the <em>Guild Wars 2 </em>release date as June 26th.<br />

	As has been repeated countless times by ArenaNet devs, no information should be treated as official unless it's directly from them. Everyone seems to freak out about grabbing his or her special character name at the launch of a new MMO, and we imagine <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars-2"><em>Guild Wars 2</em></a> will invoke the same emotions. Instead of leaving this oh-so-important action to Day One, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/arenanet">ArenaNet</a> is giving players a chance to reserve their <em>Guild Wars 2</em> names... <a href="http://www.arena.net/blog/reserving-your-character-name-for-guild-wars-2">starting today</a>.<br />
<br />
The way it works is that ArenaNet will be reserving all current <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/guild-wars"><em>Guild Wars</em></a> names for the launch, and players attached to those names can then swoop in and collect them from the start. Three caveats are attached to this process, however: You have to log into <em>Guild Wars </em>sometime in 2012, you have to claim your names in <em>Guild Wars 2</em> by launch day, and you can't secure <em>Guild Wars 2's</em> single names (as <em>Guild Wars</em> forces you to make two-word names).<br />
<br />
The studio says that there are 20 million two-word names in use at this point, and we suspect that list will grow much longer after today. These names can be reserved at any point from now until whenever ArenaNet decides to compile its master list. OK, have we all gotten the jokes about <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Diablo-III/">Diablo III</a></em>'s launch out of our systems yet? Not quite? It's understandable, since the huge and much-hyped launch wound up with a <em>lot</em> of serious problems from the start. <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Blizzard/">Blizzard</a> isn't oblivious to the problems, however, and an official statement from community manager <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Bashiok/">Bashiok</a> <a href="http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5150106401">apologizes for the issues that players have been experiencing</a>. Bashiok chalks the incidents up as a simple matter of human error: "Despite very aggressive projections, our preparations for the launch of the game did not go far enough."<br />
<br />
In order to make sure that the game is running smoothly for everyone before adding another wrinkle, Blizzard is moving back the auction house launch from May 22nd to an as-yet-unspecified later date. He also does note that the game should now be running fine for everyone, with requisite knocking on wood. I'm not much of a shooter fan and probably never will be. Sure, I have as much fun blasting my way through monsters as the next gamer, but I rarely have the patience or physical stamina to overcome the pains and frustrations of shooter PvP. After all, my first rule of PvP applies especially well to shooters: <em>There is always someone better than you</em>. <a href="http://www.planetcyrene.com/html/index.html"><em>Planet Cyrene</em></a>, the new world being added to the impressive portfolio of <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/">Entropia Universe</a>, tasks players tasks similar to those found in <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/?"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> and mixes in PvP arenas that promise to frustrate (or delight) players, depending on their skill level. I sat down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ed-robles-III/">Ed Robles III</a>, lead developer for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/entropia/">Planet Cyrene</a>,</em> to see just how nasty and expensive things might get.<br />

Remember, this is the Entropia Universe we are talking about, and that means players will spend real money on bullets, armor, and practically everything else. Fortunately, players can earn items that are worth real money as well. Certain members of our audience are likely shaking their heads at the question, but some potential players genuinely don't have any idea. After all, the first game was released back in 1996. <a href="http://diablo3.com/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> officially launched at midnight last night, opening the floodgates on what is possibly the most pre-ordered PC game in history. It's been almost 12 years since the previous game in the series launched, and it's still going to this day. Whether you've played previous games, have taken part in the <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii"><em>Diablo III</em></a> beta or are taking your first steps into Sanctuary today, everyone starts with a clean slate. In this article, I give my top five tips for spending your first few days wisely in <em>Diablo III</em>.<br />
<br />
<strong>#5 - Spend most of your time on one character</strong><br />
<br />
It seems like a bit of a no-brainer to initially focus on one character, but in <em>Diablo III</em>'s case, there's a special reason to do it. You'll likely finish normal mode around level 20-30, and until then, you'll get a new skill almost every level. It's only when you've completed normal mode and moved on to nightmare that the challenge really starts and you will have picked out an effective set of skills. Your last active skill unlocks at level 30, and from then on <a href="http://diablo.incgamers.com/blog/comments/character-progression-charts">you'll gain a combination of two to three runes or passive skills every level</a> until you hit the level cap at 60.<br />

It's been a rollercoaster week for Australian <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> fans who pre-ordered their copies of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/blizzard">Blizzard's</a> long-awaited dungeon crawler at <a href="http://www.game.com.au/">GAME</a>. The troubled retailer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/14/game-australia-enters-voluntary-administration/">went into administration</a> yesterday, leaving customers in the lurch without their game or their refunds.<br />
<br />
Blizzard has since stepped in and offered to make good with a free digital copy as long as fans have a valid pre-order receipt. Kotaku has <a href="http://kotaku.com/5910302/blizzard-shouts-unlucky-diablo-iii-fans-a-free-copy-of-diablo-iii">all the details</a> on how to submit your receipt and receive your credit. If all goes well, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ncsoft">NCsoft's</a> <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/blade-and-soul/"><em>Blade &amp; Soul</em></a> will be making its public debut in July. That's the good news; the bad news is that the launch will be confined to Korea for the time being.<br />
<br />
The company <a href="http://www.thisisgame.com/en/2012/05/15/bladesoul-is-expected-to-launch-in-july">recently announced in an earnings call</a> that the title is on track to go into open beta testing by June and then launch this July. There's some hope at NCsoft that the release of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/diablo-iii/"><em>Diablo III</em></a> will grow the potential gamer audience in the country, an audience that could be attracted to <em>Blade &amp; Soul</em> come this summer.<br />

Currently the game is in closed beta, with the next round of testing commencing on May 22nd. The core of <em>Diablo</em> gameplay is the mouse click. You do everything from combat to looting to movement with your mouse, and your interactions with your keyboard are extremely minimal overall. On Twitter recently, many <em>Diablo </em>diehards have mentioned they were buying a new mouse specifically to use with <em>Diablo III</em> -- and that's not a bad idea. No, we're not talking a brand-new $80 Razer Naga; we're talking some $10 to $15 thing you can pick up off of a department store shelf. You want a mouse that you're not going to mourn when your buttons inevitably give out from the mountain of abuse you're about to unleash upon them. <em><a href="http://www.darklegends.com/">Dark Legends</a></em>, the new title from mobile MMO king <a href="http://www.spacetimestudios.com/">Spacetime Studios</a>, is already creating a buzz with its liberal use of an energy pool that is sapped as players go through standard gameplay. If this mechanic were packaged any differently and inside a sandbox, it's possible that people would call it "realistic" or "hardcore." Unfortunately, problems set in as soon as players realized that playing the game for hours on end would require some infusion of real-life funds or the ability to kill pretty large chunks of time in non-combat areas.<br />
<br />
I would argue that the gameplay does not have to be designed for marathon gaming sessions. It's very possible that the "casual" part of the game's description <em>actually means</em> "casual." I still had issues with the mechanic; don't get me wrong. But if I was bothered by anything it would be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dark-Legends/"><em>Dark Legends'</em></a> lack of borrowing features from <a href="http://pocketlegends.com/"><em>Pocket Legends</em></a>, Spacetime's flagship mobile MMO, which offers actual persistent areas and other MMO staples.<br />

Of course, it's possible that Spacetime is simply trying something new. Saying that it "feels as though a giant weight has been lifted off [his team's] shoulders" now that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera/"><em>TERA </em></a>has launched, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/en-masse-entertainment">En Masse</a> Senior Producer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/brian-knox">Brian Knox</a> has turned his attention to the immediate and far future of the game. He says that the team is hard at work ironing out "pain points" for players, but his big passion is working to make the PvP experience even better and to roll out the battlegrounds this summer.<br />
<br />
"I want to continue to slowly iterate our PvP-server rules," Knox said in an interview published yesterday. "I think <em>TERA's</em> skill-based system is a natural fit for PvP players, and I want to develop a system that encourages and rewards PvP participants."<br />
<br />
Knox addressed the pace of the leveling experience (he says it should be a "smooth and even ride" if players follow the story and do all the quests), the price of teleportation scrolls (expensive for lowbies, affordable for veterans), and what to do at the endgame (answer: a lot). After that long wait, iOS owners can stop penning brooding poetry on Livejournal and start playing the game proper: <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/spacetime-studios/">Spacetime Studios</a> has released <em>Dark Legends</em> <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dark-legends-3d-mmo/id475249795">on the App Store</a>.<br />

Apple users can now joining the 500,000-plus <em>Dark Legends</em> community by simply downloading the game from the store and getting their vamp on. Edward-wannabes have a daunting task in front of them, however, as all of the darker fantasy forces are out to be a serious pain in their neck.<br />

<em>Dark Legends</em> follows in the wake of Spacetime's enormously popular <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Pocket-Legends/"><em>Pocket Legends</em></a> and <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Star-Legends/"><em>Star Legends</em></a>. Whenever a game launches, there's always a question of whether it will sink or swim. MMOs don't necessarily live or die on the basis of their launches, but it takes a lot more effort to recover from a bad launch. <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/TERA/">TERA</a></em> seems to have gotten off on the right foot, as it hit the #1 download spot for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Amazon/">Amazon</a> during its launch week, and all projections point to it hitting the top spot next week as well.<br />

If you're tempted to jump on the bandwagon, now is definitely the time. According to several tipsters and many, many pages on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/tera"><em>TERA's</em></a> forums, something's gone badly wrong with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/en-masse-entertainment">En Masse's</a> account system. <a href="http://tera-forums.enmasse.com/forums/news-announcements/topics/Remaining-Subscription-Time-Fixed?page=1">The studio admits</a> that some players have been billed immediately upon selecting a subscription plan instead of being billed after the 30 days. Other players have reported <a href="https://tera-answers.enmasse.com/posts/e1579d1d15?start=391&amp;stop=405">not being able to log in at all</a>, as the game cannot find their subscriptions or free time and delivers an "expired account" error.<br />
<br />
En Masse posted that it is aware of the situation and is working to resolve it. The studio says that players who purchased a physical copy of the game and signed up for a subscription before entering their game code triggered this problem. However, we've also had reports of players who have encountered this error <a href="https://tera-support.enmasse.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/370">when dealing with digital copies</a>.<br />

Affected players should now be able to log in to <em>TERA </em>while En Masse works on fixing the error.<br />

	Today is a fateful day for Arboreans everywhere, as <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/en-masse-entertainment">En Masse Entertainment's</a> spankin'-new action-based MMO, <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/category/tera">TERA</a></em>, is officially live. In celebration of the momentous occasion, the studio has released a shiny launch trailer for existing fans and potential players alike to feast their eyes upon. As one might expect from the game that coined the terms "big-ass monster" and "real action combat," the trailer is essentially a series of scenes of ass-kicking set to some suitably epic music, offering players a glimpse at the fast-paced combat they can expect from the title.<br />

	In addition to the launch trailer, the studio has posted the two final race videos; we've included all three after the cut.<br />

	But of course, MMO launch days are always fraught with at least a few issues, and <em>TERA</em>'s launch is no different. Many players are experiencing errors that are keeping them from getting into and enjoying the game, but En Masse tells those players to rest assured that the team is "actively working to resolve them." One of the more interesting pieces we've run across thus far outlines all the changes made to the <em>TERA</em> client to accommodate western audiences.<br />

Gameranx.com has a list of 10 things <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/en-masse-entertainment">En Masse</a> did differently when it appropriated the Korean version of the game, including controller support, quest rewrites, reputation, and daily quests. The firm also made extensive changes to the game's leveling curve to avoid the dreaded "Korean grind-fest" syndrome that supposedly prevents Asian MMOs from finding success in the States.<br />
