A long time ago on a server far, far away, the Imperial forces <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> prepared a <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/star-wars-the-old-republic"><em>Star Wars: The Old Republic</em></a> update to rule the online world: <a href="http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/05/21/star-wars-the-old-republics-13-patch-revealed">patch 1.3</a>. Called Allies, patch 1.3 will usher in a group finder, character transfers, and legacy perks.<br />
<br />
The group finder will aid in banding together interested adventurers to tackle operations and flashpoints. Lead Designer <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/daniel-erickson">Daniel Erickson</a> said that the time is ripe for the feature, as players are spread out in levels and are rolling plenty of alts. Saying that BioWare wants to "respect the communities" that have formed, Erickson reports that the group finder will not be cross-server.<br />
<br />
He also revealed some of the other key features for patch 1.3. Additional perks to the Legacy system will allow players to customize their experience; we'll see new ports, earlier access to mounts, and bonus XP modifiers for PvP. The patch will also change social gear to fit the armor type of the class using it, server transfers, and the ability to add augments to any crafting items. Looking past 1.3, Erickson promises a "return to big content" with patch 1.4.<br />

	This first video focuses on the upcoming Queen Black Dragon update, which is a members' update that will be coming in two parts. The first part of the update will bring a new questline and a "multi-level training dungeon," while part two will bring the Queen Black Dragon herself. The video promises that the fight will be one of the biggest that <em>RuneScape</em> has ever seen, and players who emerge victorious will have plenty of loot to look forward to. Here I am making myself crazy once again. Why? Why do I insist on visiting games that I know will provoke issues both physical and mental? I guess it's because lately I have been fascinated with MUDs, or multi-user-dungeons. They are better described as text-based MMOs or choose-your-own-adventure books written with thousands of other players. It's a fascinating concept, especially when you consider how dissimilar it is to today's modern, easy-to-play offerings. The ancient design of the MUD now feels fresh, so much so that I have decided to dedicate a future article about the possibility of MUDs' viability in today's three-dimensional world.<br />
<br />
I have found some good and some very bad over the last several weeks. I've also stumbled across brand-new versions of the migraines that often bother me when I concentrate way, way too hard on PC text. I have to admit that my issues do not seem that common, but it is important to look at a game from all angles, even from the angle of someone who has specific issues. <a href="http://www.bat.org/"><em>BatMUD</em></a> has tested my patience over the last few weeks and several hours. In the wake of <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/05/18/38-studios-project-copernicus-to-release-in-june-2013-says-ri/">the Rhode Island governor's release announcement</a>, all eyes are on <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/38-Studios/">38 Studios</a> and <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Project-Copernicus/">Project Copernicus</a></em>. Up until now the title has been talked about only in hushed tones, but today we've gotten a little something more: a flythrough of some areas of the game, showing off what we can expect from the environments. And suddenly that announced release date seems just a touch more plausible because the environments certainly look gorgeous.<br />
<br />
Players of <em>Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</em> will no doubt recognize some of the environmental looks if not the exact locations, but everyone can appreciate the design that's gone into each region. Of course, it's a long road between showing a pretty place and making a playable game, and 38 Studios is still struggling to keep its head above water. But the MMO the studio has promised seems a bit more plausible now, and hopefully there's a light at the end of this particular tunnel.<br />

I spent an hour romping through the woods of <a href="http://www.paradoxplaza.com/games/salem"><em>Salem</em></a> last Friday with <a href="http://www.seatribe.se/">Seatribe</a> head honcho <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/bjorn-johannesen">Bjorn Johannessen</a>. The tiny indie company (current dev population: two) is hard at work on its followup to <a href="http://www.havenandhearth.com/portal/"><em>Haven and Hearth</em></a>, an acquired taste of a sandbox game notable for its no-holds barred approach that includes permadeath and the ability to summon (and kill) criminal characters -- even while their lulz-loving puppet-masters are offline.<br />
<br />
Publisher <a href="http://www.paradoxplaza.com/">Paradox</a> bills <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/salem"><em>Salem</em></a> as "the crafting MMO," and boy it's not kidding. Shields generally aren't thought of as a weapon; they're usually seen as the exact <em>opposite</em> of a weapon. But in the superheroic milieu, all that changes. A shield is something to be used offensively, and in <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/DC-Universe-Online/">DC Universe Online</a></em>'s next major update, players will begin wielding the shield for their own superheroic (or villainous) capers. <a href="http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/05/17/exclusive-behind-the-scenes-look-at-dc-universe-onlines-next-weapon-type-the-shield/">A recent interview</a> with creative director <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Jens-Andersen/">Jens Andersen</a> discusses the intended role of the shield in combat.<br />
<br />
Andersen explains that while the new weapon comes along in a very PvP-centered update, it's not meant to be used specifically for PvP; the team just wants to have something new for players to enjoy no matter what. In play, shields are similar to a staff weapon, but unlike most other weapons, the shield can continue to build a combo after a heavy strike by moving back to light strikes. It's really hard to imagine anything in the saccharine world of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Spirit-Tales/">Spirit Tales</a></em> being properly termed a crisis, but the game's newest update is aiming in that direction. <a href="http://forum.koramgame.com/thread-60427-1-1.html">The Crisis of Jade Forest</a> goes live on May 23rd, giving players a chance to tackle an extra-difficult version of the normal Jade Forest area with extra boss-enriched goodness. Successful players have plenty of motivation, however, as the reward for completion involves a chest that could contain items normally reserved for the game's item mall.<br />
<br />
Groups of up to five players can enter the battle once per day, which fills the area with deadly monsters and 10 special bosses. So <a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com"><em>The Secret World's</em></a> mission system treads well off the beaten MMO path. It's pretty cool, actually, though portions of it may irritate quest-grinders who just want to blow through zones on their way to the game's equivalent of a max-level toon.<br />
<br />

I'm not much of a shooter fan and probably never will be. Sure, I have as much fun blasting my way through monsters as the next gamer, but I rarely have the patience or physical stamina to overcome the pains and frustrations of shooter PvP. After all, my first rule of PvP applies especially well to shooters: <em>There is always someone better than you</em>. <a href="http://www.planetcyrene.com/html/index.html"><em>Planet Cyrene</em></a>, the new world being added to the impressive portfolio of <a href="http://www.entropiauniverse.com/">Entropia Universe</a>, tasks players tasks similar to those found in <a href="http://www.planetcalypso.com/home/?"><em>Planet Calypso</em></a> and mixes in PvP arenas that promise to frustrate (or delight) players, depending on their skill level. I sat down with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/ed-robles-III/">Ed Robles III</a>, lead developer for <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/entropia/">Planet Cyrene</a>,</em> to see just how nasty and expensive things might get.<br />

Remember, this is the Entropia Universe we are talking about, and that means players will spend real money on bullets, armor, and practically everything else. New classes are always exciting. In a game with an established set of abilities and character options, the chance to take a different option helps keep the game engaging and surprising. That's no doubt part of the rationale behind <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Runes-of-Magic/">Runes of Magic</a></em>'s two new classes, the Champion and the Warlock. But they're also meant to show off the ingenuity and cleverness of the Dwarves, and <a href="http://us.runesofmagic.com/us/news,id2944,modern_technology_or_dark_magic.html">in a new preview of these two classes</a>, it becomes clear just how much both will bring to the table.<br />
<br />
The Warlock is an arcane caster who has delved into the knowledge of the Shadowforge Dwarves, allowing him to act as either a damage dealer or a support character as the situation warrants. Champions are masters of pseudo-mystical forge techniques, with the Champion ultimately being capable of transforming into a special Runic Robot form for increased damage and durability. <a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com"><em>The Secret World's</em></a> press beta hasn't been what I expected. To be frank, I'd say there are times I wish I didn't have to play it. See, my guild pals are on either the closed beta server or the public beta weekends server, both of which are quite crowded and therefore offer quite a different experience from the forlorn existence endured by my Massively Templar.<br />
<br />
There's also the whole I-don't-get-to-keep-this-character thing, not to mention the wow-this-is-cool-and-I-don't-want-to-spoil-it-for-myself-post-launch thing.<br />

On the other hand, I've had plenty of time to muck around with game systems and minutiae, something that my card-carrying membership in the crazy carebear immersionist secret society often precludes. 	<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/02/16/cyclops-joins-marvel-heroes-roster/">Cyclops</a> and the other revealed playable characters will soon have a another compatriot to add to their ranks in the upcoming super-hero game <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/marvel-heroes">Marvel Heroes</a></em>. Who will it be? For now, <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/gazillion/">Gazillion</a> is teasing fans with a silhouette of the mystery woman, but guesses are already being tossed around. Is it Ms. Marvel? Could it be Phoenix? Some are even hedging a guess that it's possibly even Elektra. Mum is the official word for now, so it is up to fans to puzzle it out.<br />

<a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/namaste-entertainment">Namaste Entertainment's</a> upcoming MMO-narrative-building toolset, <em><a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/storybricks">Storybricks</a></em>, is quickly picking up steam among the massively multiplayer gaming community. The quirky title recently released a public alpha client to coincide with the project's Kickstarter campaign, and I had the opportunity to sit down with Namaste's <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/brian-green">Brian "Psychochild" Green</a> and <a href="http://www.massively.com/tag/kelly-heckman">Kelly Heckman</a> for a tour of the client as well as a short interview on what the future holds for the toolbox-cum-MMOG project.<br />

<em><a href="http://www.darklegends.com/">Dark Legends</a></em>, the new title from mobile MMO king <a href="http://www.spacetimestudios.com/">Spacetime Studios</a>, is already creating a buzz with its liberal use of an energy pool that is sapped as players go through standard gameplay. If this mechanic were packaged any differently and inside a sandbox, it's possible that people would call it "realistic" or "hardcore." Unfortunately, problems set in as soon as players realized that playing the game for hours on end would require some infusion of real-life funds or the ability to kill pretty large chunks of time in non-combat areas.<br />
<br />
I would argue that the gameplay does not have to be designed for marathon gaming sessions. It's very possible that the "casual" part of the game's description <em>actually means</em> "casual." I still had issues with the mechanic; don't get me wrong. But if I was bothered by anything it would be <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/Dark-Legends/"><em>Dark Legends'</em></a> lack of borrowing features from <a href="http://pocketlegends.com/"><em>Pocket Legends</em></a>, Spacetime's flagship mobile MMO, which offers actual persistent areas and other MMO staples.<br />

Of course, it's possible that Spacetime is simply trying something new. Companions are one of the main features of <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic/">Star Wars: The Old Republic</a></em>, but they're also sometimes very limiting. Depending on your class and spec, you can find yourself with only one or two companions with useful abilities. But that's partly by design; according to <a href="http://www.swtor.com/blog/community-qa-may-11th-2012">the latest community Q&amp;A</a>, the distinctiveness of companions is both a result of their abilities and their personalities. The team has no plans for making companions more interchangeable, at least for the moment.<br />
<br />
If you were hoping for better news, don't fret, as the other answers are a fair bit more positive. The technical hurdles preventing some classes from having a modifiable offhand are being looked into, and the answers also delve into the details of adding a new augment slot to existing modifiable items. 	The real secret to <a href="http://thesecretworld.com/"><em>The Secret World</em></a> is that it's the Matrix (see the above picture from the character creator that resembles <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrie-Anne_Moss">Carrie-Anne Moss</a>).<br />
	<br />
	Actually, the first and most important stop for an MMO gamer is the character creator. When you're in beta, it might not be as important because the character will be tossed away in a few short weeks. However, in the live game, this character will not only be the same one you might see for years to come; it's also a reflection of you as a player. There are some players who insist on playing the ugliest races in the game, while others want the prettiest or the strongest. Personally, I lean toward playing female characters. I'm not sure what that says about me.<br />

Believing in <a href="http://www.thesecretworld.com"><em>The Secret World</em></a> takes a certain of amount of... faith. And I'm not just talking about <a href="http://www.funcom.com">Funcom's</a> less-than-stellar reputation when it comes to bug-free MMO launches. No, the very foundation of this particular title rests on a narrative about things unseen, and that cryptic, otherworldly esoterica informed every moment of my time spent in the press beta over the last couple of days.<br />
<br />
The basic premise, of course, is that <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/04/07/the-secret-world-readying-seven-years-of-content-new-trailer-re/">everything is true</a>. Every myth, legend, and spook story that our rational minds scoff at has a place in this particular riff on reality.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/the-secret-world"><em>The Secret World</em></a> is also quite heretical when it comes to gameplay. It eschews the tried and true class-based approach for a complex grimoire of a skill system featuring an ability wheel made of hieroglyphs and higher math (or so it first appears). To come right to the point, though, I bought into the game almost immediately.<br />

With all the talk about how <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/MechWarrior-Online/">MechWarrior Online</a></em> will play, potential players have no doubt been itching to see the game in full swing. We only recently got a peek at the first in-game screenshots, but today a veritable cascade of new information is available. Not one, not two, but <em>six</em> preview videos have been released, showing off the general gameplay, all four 'Mech weight classes, and the interface for customizing your 'Mech before you march it into battle.<br />
<br />
Aside from a variety of gameplay footage (clearly unpolished but still encouraging), the videos give some insight into the game's design goals. Rather than following the route of the classic <em>MechWarrior</em> games that placed the heaviest 'Mechs at the top of the food chain, <em>MechWarrior Online</em> wants all machines to have a place on the battlefield depending on player style and battlefield objectives. But why read about it when you can watch it in action just past the break? "Fornost was designed and built in a different era of MMO," <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/turbine/">Turbine's</a> <a href="http://www.lotro.com/gameinfo/devdiaries/1990-update-7-developer-diary-fornost">devs said about the newly revised dungeon</a>. "It is time for Fornost to join the modern MMO world." With Fornost slated for a massive overhaul with <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/tag/update-7/">Update 7</a>, the team posted a developer diary to explain the history of the instance and its hopeful future.<br />
<br />
The third instance ever created for <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/lord-of-the-rings-online"><em>Lord of the Rings Online</em></a> will be chopped up from its current super-long state to four manageable dungeons. The devs said that it was designed from an <a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/everquest"><em>EverQuest</em></a> mindset of long dungeon crawls, but so much has changed over time and most players no longer have the time or effort to conquer it.<br />
<br />
With Update 7, Fornost will turn into four element-themed six-person dungeons. Each of these dungeons should take well less than an hour to complete and scale from level 30 to 75 with two tiers of difficulty. The team's reworked positioning, bosses, and quests to reflect the upgraded experience. Are you in withdrawal after the last <em><a href="http://massively.joystiq.com/category/Guild-Wars-2/">Guild Wars 2</a></em> testing weekend? Feeling the need to get back in the game, even if it's just for one night? If so, you're in luck, as the team has just recently announced that <a href="http://www.facebook.com/GuildWars2/posts/10150848164094209">the game will be performing a surprise stress test on Monday, May 14th</a> between 2:00 p.m. EDT until 9:00 p.m. EDT.
