New Star Trek Online screenshots reveal character customization depth

Filed under: Sci-fi, Screenshots, New titles, News items, Star Trek Online

The newest trio of screens to come out for Star Trek Online give us a taste of what to expect from the character customization options touted in the MMO. But simply calling it character creation would be underselling it. Cryptic is promising fully-featured racial creation tools here, which explains why the lady in the upper right of the image above looks like a green Klingon. Don't get us wrong, we're totally cool with green ridge-head ladies -- they're just the bee's knees. Though in truth we've always had a soft spot for Betazoids, if we're going to be honest here.

Aside from this visual tease, the other two images focus on the game environment like most of the previous screenshots we've seen. We're happy to be getting a little bit more information out of Cryptic, even if the offering has only made us lust for more customization details. Consider us on watch for visual starship customization examples.

One Shots: The darkening of the light

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online, One Shots

Where the clouds pull apart, and the moon changes faces, In the quiet secret places are you there? If you play on the Iron Claw server, you'd likely have run into Snacky who sent us today's Warhammer Online One Shots. While running around, Snacky came across the following scene, and sent this screen to us along with the following note: As my Shaman (why not Shawoman?) was travelling in the land of the Dark Elves, I was overcome with emotion as I stood upon a cliff ledge and watched with fascination the swirling light-show in the sky.

If you've found a cool location on your daily travels, we'd love to see it! Just send it in to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name/server/guild and a quick description. We'll post it out here for the world to see -- and potentially add in pop-culture references, too!

Massively in Metropolis: DC Universe Online concept art sneak peek

Filed under: Super-hero, Screenshots, New titles, Massively Hands-on, DC Universe Online

Batman. Superman. Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter. Black Canary, Oracle, The Question. The world of DC Comics is populated with amazing characters and fantastic stories. The entire four-color experience is coming to fans of the MMO genre in the form of DC Universe Online, a title in Sony Online Entertainment's stable of next-gen MMOs. Alongside the FPS title The Agency and casual/kid friendly Free Realms, DCUO looks to reinvent the concept of massively multiplayer game for comic book fans. And Massively has had a lengthy first-hand look at this groundbreaking title.

We had extensive hands-on playtime with the game's combat and powers mechanics, and hours of face to face chat time with the developers at SOE Austin. Over the next week, Massively is going to fully explore this dyanmic in-development game. In the words of the developers we'll crack into the studio's philosophy of play and discover the value these developers place on your play time.

To kick things off we've got a fantastic gallery of concept art taken right from the walls of the SOE Austin studios. Explore the work of Jim Lee and the other DCUO artists, with commentary on what you're seeing and hints on what is coming in the next week. Plus! One Shots: Tryin' to catch me riding nerdy

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, New titles, Warhammer Online, One Shots

We can only figure that it is thanks to some strange combination of Mythic and Weird Al that today's Warhammer Online One Shots came in to us as it did. Why would we say that? Well, this is perhaps the first time we've had anyone write us and tell us that they were purposely trying to sound "nerdy." We were amused too. Here's what today's contributor, Neurose, sent in: My name is Neurose and I play on the Open-RvR server Dark Crag. This is a shot of me [on my] Warrior Priest with my friend Knyte the Bright Witch mounted on our noble steeds. This description is meant to sound as nerdy as possible, and I think I succeeded in doing so. Enjoy.

Have you found a funny pop-culture reference in your favorite game? Perhaps you'd just like to see if you can spur us into making one with your screenshot. If you're playing an MMO, you're invited to send some in! Just grab some screenshots of your daily adventures and send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your character's name/server/guild and a quick description of what we're seeing. Yours could be next.

One Shots: Hooray for matching armor

Filed under: World of Warcraft, Betas, Fantasy, Screenshots, One Shots

When Burning Crusade first came out, people at endgame started out in (generally) a pretty decently matched set of raiding or quested gear. Within a few levels, most looked like they'd been hitting Bob's Discount Armor and Party Supplies for gear. While it's not true of all quest armor that you pick up, Deadend sent in this screenshot to show that apparently Blizzard decided to go more towards a more uniform look in Wrath quest armor. Beats looking like an overblown pinata again, eh?

If you're in Wrath, if you're in regular World of Warcraft, or if you're playing another non-Blizzard MMO altogether, we'd love to see your screenshots. Just snag some and send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name/server/group and a quick description of what we're seeing. We'll post it out here for everyone else to enjoy and give you the credit.

Star Trek Online wallpapers are 75% generic, 25% gorgeous

Filed under: Sci-fi, Screenshots, New titles, Wallpapers, Star Trek Online

There's been a dearth of Star Trek Online news or information these past few weeks. We've been upset about it. Cryptic just broke radio science at long last, though: four Star Trek Online wallpapers have been posted at the game site. We've got all of 'em here for you to see, but head over to the official gallery for the full breadth of resolution choices.

One of them is a rare in-game glimpse at a planet surface. It looks gorgeous, although we're suddenly worried about the minimum system requirements. Hopefully those nice lighting and shadow effects will scale back for low-end desktops and notebooks.

One Shots: Destruction is fun

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online, One Shots

We're not just talking about playing Destruction classes (which is pretty fun in itself) but in the general destruction wrought in the lands of Warhammer Online. Today's One Shots shows off just that type of carnage brought by the will of Brevia of Genocidal Tendencies, who sent this screen in to us. She writes in: Brevia is giggling with manic pleasure shortly after torching the building (in the tier 1 area of the human pairing known as Nordland) you see behind her -- as well as torturing and killing the guard who once stood there protecting it. Long live Destruction! And yes, Stunties do in fact taste like chicken!

Are you playing Warhammer Online? Have we seen screenshots from you yet? If not, what are you waiting for! Grab some screens of your adventuring and send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your character name/server/guild and a quick description of what we're seeing in the picture. After all, what's the point of tearing it up in your favorite MMO if you can't show it off?

Legends of Norrath Ethernauts card preview: Temperence

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, EverQuest, EverQuest II, Legends of Norrath

Our third and final Legends of Norrath preview card for the Ethernauts set is on display this morning. Ethernauts releases this Thursday, so this card brings our preview series for LoN Expansion 6. We've previously talked about several other 'card counter' mechanic offerings, including the personal attack card Vicious Assault and the pet buff Geotic Rune. Today, finally, we have a defensive card using the card counter mechanic; a quick flip of the wrist to get you out of a tight spot.

This past week we also took a look at some of the loot cards coming with this set. Those and all three of our preview cards are in our gallery for the set, below. Check them out, and get ready for the Legends of Norrath expansion's launch the day after tomorrow. Read on below the cut for a closer look at Temperence.

One Shots: The Isle awaits

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Vanguard, One Shots

We couldn't have been happier when SOE recently opened up Vanguard: Saga of Heroes for a free-trial period. We'd been looking to do a First Impressions on Vanguard for a while, but were waiting on the trial to open up so others could check it out as well. When we saw this particular screenshot come in to our One Shots mailbox from Luni, we thought the timing was awesome; we're working on our own First Impressions piece now. That said, today's One Shots is all about this great screenshot from Luni, who wrote in: I recently started the psionist half-elf character named Luni in the new Vanguard newbie zone - Isle of Dawn. I have to admit that these newly-created areas are really impressive AND immersive.

Do you play a game we don't often see here? Perhaps you'd like to tip us off to an awesome game that we haven't covered as yet by sending us some tasty screenshots of the game. Whatever your reason, all MMO screenshots are welcome! Just send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name/server/guild and a quick description of what we're seeing in the image. Who knows? You might see us jumping in your favorite game to check it out.

One Shots: Fowl play

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, New titles, Warhammer Online, One Shots

When we first heard about the mechanic to keep over-level players out of lower leveled RVR zones in Warhammer Online, we thought it was a creative way of dealing with potential griefing. Of course, a good sized group decided to get creative in return and figured that it would be fun to try overrunning a lower-level RVR area anyway. Today's One Shots was the rather strange result of it. Telenrion sent this in to us here with the following note: This was taken in the Warhammer Online T1 Open RvR area during Open Beta. An army of chickens showed up. They eventually attacked, and cornered a Magus. Whether one of them got the killing blow, only that chicken knows, but he did die in a mass of feathered fury. Now all we want is for dead chickens to drop drumsticks. Yum!

Have you seen something bizarre in your gaming? Have you run a-fowl of a weird situation? If so, you need to send those screenshots in to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com so we can share them with the rest of the world. Remember to include your character's name/server/guild and a quick description. Otherwise we have to keep egging you on to send them.

Join the WAR: the propaganda posters of Warhammer Online

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online

The folks at Mythic Entertainment have impressed us again and again with their ability to sell their game with a smile. Whether it's via the production podcasts, Paul Barnett's video blogging, their in-person appearances or Mark Jacobs' personal blog the team has tried to put Warhammer Online in front of us in some different ways. So, really, it's not surprising that they've offered up some fantastic propaganda-style posters espousing the various benefits of WAR races.

There are some funny, funny slogans in there, one for each race. "Stunty tastes like Chicken" may be the most direct, but they're all clever. "It's our World, you just Die in it" for the Dark Elves, "Would you Kill for a Beer?" for the Dwarves and "Kill them all, let Sigmar sort them out" for the Empire are probably this blogger's favorite. You can check out the whole set of posters in our gallery below, or on the official Warhammer Online site. Which one is your favorite?

One Shots: Rikti invasion chaos

Filed under: Super-hero, Screenshots, City of Heroes, Events, in-game, One Shots

As many City of Heroes players know, this last week has been chock full of great xp and adventure. What could possibly make heroes show up en masse and lay the smack down? How about an enormous Rikti invasion? Sure, the Rikti gave us the technology that allows us to teleport here and there, rez in the hospitals and whatnot, but when the aliens show up, it's time to protect Paragon City. The above City of Heroes One Shots was snapped by this blogger during an invasion in Talos Island just a few days ago, showing the teeming masses of heroes defending the Virtue server from invasion.

If you've been involved in an invasion, RvR, PvP, or an awesome storyline, we want to see your screenshots! Just send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name/group/server and a quick description. We'll format them up and post them for the world to see, and you'll get all the credit.

One Shots: Sunset with a friend

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Warhammer Online, One Shots

We've seen many things out of Warhammer Online, but sunsets and images from the Order side of the house have been few and far between. That said, this lovely screenshot today makes up ground for both lovely sunsets and Order players! Today's One Shots comes to us from the White Lion Slatch from Ulthuan, who, along with his War Lion Rawr, took a moment to enjoy a lovely sunset off the coast of Ellyrion after "a hard day of RvR." We're certainly glad to see it, and hope many more Warhammer Online players (both Order and Destruction) will send in their cool screenshots too. We know we can't have seen all this world has to offer as yet.

Something old, something new, something freaky, something... well, anything really. We're all about your screenshots. If you've run across a scene that's cool, interesting, or off the wall, we'd love to see a screen from you. Just send it to oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name/server/guild and a brief description. Your screenshot could be the next one featured here on Massively!

One Shots: Midnight riders

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, Lord of the Rings Online, One Shots

It seems that the recent festival has brought in more Lord of the Rings Online pictures in from far and wide. Today's One Shots shows off a kinship riding off for adventure courtesy of a ride from the last festival! Rhedbjerd writes in and tells us more about this particular screenshot: This one didn't come out as well as I'd hoped, but it's a pic of the Laer En Tul Acharn kinship crossing the Ford of Bruinen in the central Trollshaws on the way to Rivendell. You can't really see it, but we're all on the summer festival horses. What impresses us is that you can see the horses reflected in the water too. Nice touch!

Do you have a screenshot showing your guild, kinship, battlegroup, or [insert group name here] heading off into battle, adventure, cat herding or shenanigans together? Grab those screenshots and send them to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name/group/server and a quick description. We'll post them up for all to see and give you the credit!

One Shots: I'm a monster. Rawr!

Filed under: Fantasy, Screenshots, New titles, Warhammer Online, One Shots

It's the attack of the 50-foot Chaos female! Okay, okay, not really. This is actually one of those easter eggs we mentioned the other day, which appears to show off a wee teeny little Empire village. Today's One Shot comes to us from Snacky, who is playing on the server Sylvania. Snacky has managed to find both the moon easter egg and this one -- along with another one in Warhammer Online that we'll be posting in the next few days. We're still amused that you can get a title for clicking on yourself a hundred times, so WAR having extra 'eggs' doesn't surprise us at all.

If you've found something out of the way in your favorite game, strange, unusual, or interesting, we'd love to see it! Just send your screenshots to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name/server/guild and a quick description. We'll post them up here for everyone to puzzle out just how you got there. (Of course, you could tell us, but that's optional.)
